What parks would you suggest for my pregnancy photo shoot ?

Depending on the time of year, I will suggest venues which I know create artistic backdrops for maternity photoshoots. In late April, I would suggest Hodgemoor Woods in Chalfont St Giles or local parks with rows of daffodils and bluebells. Between July and August the Mayfield Lavender Farm open up their blankets of purple or if you live in Central London, Hyde Park is always a perfect venue for a pregnancy photography shoot. In October, the leaves start to change colour and the forests turn into paintings of warm red, orange and yellow; your bump photo shoot will be nothing short of magic. There may be a small additional charge for some chosen venues due to entrance fees.

Schedule your maternity photoshoot early

I would thoroughly suggest booking your maternity session as early as possible to make sure you get the best time scheduled for your bump.

An excellent time to take photos is in the third trimester between 30 and 34 weeks. By this time, your baby bump will be visible and look amazing in photographs. In this trimester you will still be capable of moving around and pose at ease. Whilst you can do a pregnancy shoot after this time, there’s a possibility you’ll have more difficulty standing and posing for a long period of time.

Don’t skip the opportunity to pamper yourself

Your hands are going to appear in most of your images so this is an ideal reason to pamper yourself a little bit with a specialized manicure.

Styling your hair for your maternity photoshoot

I would suggest keeping your hair loose and flowy, rather than tight and pulled back. I’d rather your child showed up in 2 day old braids than tight french braids. Messy hair is more inspiring and fun to photograph than perfect hair! But really, if it looks good in wavy curls, then do it because that’s going to photograph the best. And if it’s windy, it will look amazing! For boys, just do what they normally do!.

What to wear to your pregnancy shoot

Choose a Flattering Silhouette for Your Maternity Photos. You want to wear a dress that will give you the most flattering silhouette for your maternity photos. So here is what to look for:

  • A dress/top that is tight up top, meaning that it is tight to just above your pregnant belly.

  • A dress or skirt that flares out starting just above your pregnant belly. You don’t want it to be tight underneath the belly. I know there are a lot of dresses like that, and maybe this is a personal preference, but I love a flowy skirt that allows lots of movement. I think it looks more flattering and it also gives you something to play with/swish around. This is a good example of a soft dress with a soft fabric.

  • Length should be to the floor. Not too much longer than that because you don’t want to trip on it. And it’s okay if it’s slightly shorter if you want to show off your shoes. But typically a floor length dress is most flattering.

What colours should you wear to your maternity photoshoot in a park?

The reason for booking a maternity photoshoot is to show off your beautiful bump, so make sure to wear colours that will show it off. I would NOT suggest wearing black, navy or any other dark colour outdoors as this hides your pregnant bump and makes it hard to photograph. Light to medium colours look best or a soft pattern.

    Be careful with patterns

You can’t go wrong with solid colours, and dresses with some texture (like maybe some lace or crepe fabrics). But patterns can be great, too! You just want to select the right one. If you select a pattern that is too tiny, it can be too busy and really distracting. But you can also select patterns that are too big, which isn’t all that flattering. Medium sized patterns are the most desirable. You also want to make sure that the contrast between the colours in the pattern and colour of the dress aren’t too much. For example, a navy pattern on a white dress would be too much contrast. But a cream coloured pattern against a dusty rose coloured dress would be subtle and beautiful.

    Dress for the season

Make sure to think about the weather when deciding what to wear for your maternity photos. If it’s going to be a hot day, pick a more breathable fabric. If it’s going to be cold, look for a long sleeved dress, or bring a chunky knit cardigan to go over your shoulders. Chunky knits are great because you can wear it off your shoulders and it looks amazing, and then between shots you can cuddle up and get warm.

    Avoid matching your partner/family

When deciding what your partner will wear, you want to coordinate but not match. If your colours are the same, you will blend into each other and it will be hard to see the separation. Same goes for anyone in your family, we don’t want anyone blending into each other. You can search Pinterest for complimentary colours or to get ideas.
