Child Acting / Casting headshots

Present a set of dynamic headshots to leading casting agencies that will set you apart from the rest.

Now is the time to invest in a professional photographer to get your child the best headshots, especially in this saturated market. Casting agencies are seeing hundreds if not thousands of young actors on site ever day so your child’s headshots need to stand out from the crowd. Being in the portrait industry for over 18 years, I am an expert at directing children so that we can obtain a variety of strong images for their portfolio.

Wardrobe

When selecting what to wear to your session, the goal is to choose clothes that compliment you with the focus being your headshot. Avoid prints, logos and patterns that distract the eye and take the emphasis away from you. You want the clothes you choose for your casting headshot to flatter you. For young children, their headshot should reflect them as a child. Necklines on clothing should be age appropriate. Keeping necklines on clothing within the collarbone area can provide a classic look.

Makeup and hair

A child’s headshot will look best when they look themselves. Makeup should be avoided for children’s headshots, especially for young children. If your child wears makeup regularly, apply a small amount which looks natural. Casting directors want to see ‘the real you’.

For hairstyling, start with your child’s hair recently washed and looking natural, at least one headshot look should include their hair as they normally wear and style it. During your session, we can style their hair differently by using a wind machine to add gentle movement or tie their hair up to create a different look. Please bring hair bands but please avoid hats and hair accessories.

How often should I get new headshots?

When you send a casting agency your child’s headshot, you want to show them what your child looks like right now so I would suggest getting headshots done every year while your child is still young and every 2 years as they get older.

Colour or black & white?

I have always loved black and white , it strips away all the colour and forces you to focus on the subject itself, especially your eyes. However, these days more casting directors prefer colour. I will provide you with both colour and black and white so that you have both options at hand.
