When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?

Before looking at when to book your baby in for a shoot, it might be helpful to understand when the best time is to take newborn photographs is.

I specialise in posed newborn photography, and for this style of photography, the ideal time is between 7 days and 3 weeks old.

There are a few reasons for this, allow me to explain:

  • Newborns are sleepier and more relaxed in this time. This makes them much easier to photograph, as they're less likely to be fussy especially when posed with a sibling.

  • Newborns have unique poses. Newborns have a natural ability to curl up into tiny little balls. This makes for some of the most adorable and creative photographs possible.

  • Newborns are still learning about the world. The first few weeks of life are a time of exploration and wonder for babies. Capturing these moments on camera can help you remember how your baby saw the world for the first time.

  •     Newborns are a precious gift, and their tiny features are so delicate and fleeting. Their skin is soft and smooth, their toes and fingers are tiny and perfect, and their baby curls are so soft and wispy. Capturing these delicate features in the first few days of life is a cherished opportunity that leaves you with timeless memories to treasure.

  • These early days are a time of wonder and discovery for both you and your baby. Your baby is learning about the world around them, and you're learning about your new role as a parent. It's a time of great joy and excitement, and it's important to capture these memories in photos.

  • A newborn photoshoot is a great way to capture these precious moments. A professional photographer can help you create beautiful photos that you'll cherish for years to come. They can help you pose your baby in ways that flatter their delicate features, and they can use lighting and props to create stunning images.

When should you schedule your newborn photoshoot?

It's best to plan ahead and book your newborn photoshoot before your baby is born, ideally after your 12-week scan. Since most babies don't arrive on their due dates, it may seem challenging to determine the exact timing for the photoshoot. However, I have a solution to this.

When you book with me, we won't fix a specific date for the session, unless you have a planned c-section or an exact birth date. Instead, I'll pencil in a rough date and ask you to get in touch as soon as your baby arrives. Once your little one is here, we'll set a date for the photoshoot within that 7-21 days window to ensure we capture those adorable moments perfectly.

To provide a personalized experience and accommodate your baby's actual birth date rather than the estimated due date, I only accept a limited number of newborn session bookings each month. This flexibility ensures we create stunning and cherished photographs while your baby is in the sweetest stage of their life.

My baby is already here! Is it too late to book a newborn photoshoot?

Please do not worry, many families only start to think about newborn photography once their babies have arrived safely. This is ok.

I often have last minute spaces and might be able to squeeze you in so please get in touch as soon as you can to see if I have space.

If my baby is 3 weeks old, can I still have baby photographs?

If your baby is already 3 weeks old, this doesn’t mean you have to miss out, your session will be slightly adjusted but I will talk you through what to expect. However, if you want to capture the true magic of the newborn stage, it's definitely worth scheduling a photo shoot within the first few weeks of life.
